482 health insurance: questions to ask before choosing a policy

The cheapest policy is not necessarily the right cover for a 482 visa holder. Check both the immigration requirement and the practical cover provided, especially if family members are joining you or treatment is likely to be needed.

Separate health assessment from insurance

Meeting the visa health requirement and maintaining adequate insurance are different issues. An insurance certificate does not determine whether the health criteria are met. A satisfactory medical examination does not replace insurance where it is required.

Check the grant conditions and Home Affairs guidance on adequate arrangements. Most temporary visa holders should not assume they have full Medicare access. Any reciprocal healthcare entitlement needs its own assessment.

Ask concrete questions about the policy

Check hospital and out-of-hospital services, emergency treatment, medicines, excesses and benefit limits. Ask how waiting periods and pre-existing conditions are treated. Obtain the policy wording and a written explanation of any significant uncertainty.

Make sure the policy covers the correct people and dates. A cover letter for a single person will not necessarily address a family’s arrangements. Check how a change of visa, location or family composition affects the policy.

Maintain continuity after the move

Keep records of premiums and cover. Review the arrangements when renewing a visa, changing insurers or adding a family member. Do not allow a policy to lapse because the visa application has been granted.

For illustration, a worker comparing two policies should look beyond the monthly premium to likely gaps and out-of-pocket costs. Emigrate Lawyers can explain the immigration evidence question, while the insurer should confirm the terms and availability of its product. Seek suitable health or insurance advice about personal coverage needs.

Common questions

Does a 482 visa automatically provide Medicare?

Do not assume that. Entitlement depends on your circumstances and any applicable reciprocal arrangements.

Does insurance guarantee the health criterion is met?

No. The visa health assessment is separate from the insurance requirement.
