Core Skills stream

The Core Skills stream connects eligible occupations with employer-sponsored roles. Assess the job, salary and applicant together before deciding whether this stream fits.

KEY POINTS

  • Match the actual duties to an eligible Core Skills occupation.
  • Assess salary, employer evidence and applicant requirements together.
  • Check current settings before relying on an older job offer.

Start with the actual role

The Core Skills Occupation List is central to this stream. A matching job title alone is not enough: compare the proposed daily duties, responsibilities and skill level with the occupation being nominated. Check any occupation-specific restrictions before the business spends money on advertising or an application. A position description should explain the work the business genuinely needs performed, rather than reproduce an occupation description word for word.

Build the employer and applicant evidence

Prepare a role summary, proposed contract, salary breakdown and an explanation of where the position sits in the business. The applicant should assemble a dated employment history, qualifications and references that describe work actually performed. These records help identify discrepancies early, such as a senior occupation paired with junior duties. Separately consider English, any required skills assessment, registration, health and character requirements. An eligible occupation does not settle those questions.

Plan the next step

Ask the employer whether it already holds suitable sponsorship approval and who will coordinate nomination documents. Keep a list of information still outstanding, particularly evidence held by previous employers overseas. Salary requirements can change, so confirm the applicable settings for the proposed nomination rather than relying on an old offer or online article.

Hypothetical example

A business wants to sponsor a software employee. Before using a software engineering occupation, it compares the worker’s development duties with the proposed role. If the job is mainly customer support, choosing an engineering title would not resolve the mismatch.
