Changing employers on a 482 visa

Changing jobs requires a review of your visa conditions, employment history and the new employer’s sponsorship and nomination position. A job offer alone does not settle the migration steps.

KEY POINTS

  • Check current conditions, expiry and periods without sponsored employment.
  • Assess the new employer, occupation and nomination requirements.
  • Confirm work rights before agreeing to a new start date.

Establish your current position

Obtain your visa grant notice and check your current details in VEVO. Record the last day of employment, any earlier periods without sponsored employment and the intended new role. The rules applying during a cessation period need to be assessed alongside your visa expiry date. Do not assume a new employment contract resets every relevant time limit.

Check the new role before committing

Ask the prospective employer about sponsorship approval and the occupation it intends to nominate. Compare the new duties with your existing nominated occupation and identify whether a fresh visa application may be required. The permission to undertake particular work during a transition is a separate question from completing the longer-term sponsorship arrangement.

Keep a practical transition file

Retain resignation or termination correspondence, final payslips, the new offer and nomination-related documents. Establish who will communicate with each employer and confirm the planned start date against your actual work rights. If your family is in Australia, include their visa position in the discussion. Avoid arranging travel on the assumption that all bridging or existing visa arrangements remain unchanged.

Hypothetical example

A sponsored employee receives an offer from a different company. Before resigning, they check the new occupation, sponsor arrangements and current visa conditions. Where employment has already ended, the assessment also records the cessation date and any previous gaps so that the available next steps can be considered promptly.
