Travel while a 482 visa is pending: a visa and BVB checklist

A pending 482 application is not permission to return to Australia after overseas travel. Before booking a trip, check the visa that will support departure and re-entry and consider what may happen while you are away.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Departure and return dates compared with grants
  • Current visa and bridging status established
  • Any BVB granted with adequate travel period
Start with the complete picture. Read the How the 482 application process works alongside our Skills in Demand visa overview.

Check the visa that will be in effect

Collect the current substantive and bridging visa grants, VEVO record and application details. A person with a valid substantive visa may have a different travel position from someone whose bridging visa is already operating.

Check the travel facility, expiry and conditions against both departure and return dates. A pending application does not extend an expiring travel right. Account for the possibility that a decision or another relevant event may occur during the trip.

Understand the limits of bridging travel

Home Affairs explains that only a Bridging visa B provides departure and re-entry permission as a bridging visa. A BVA does not provide that travel facility. BVB eligibility, grant and the authorised travel period must be checked before departure.

Do not assume lodging a BVB application is enough. Read the grant carefully and return within the permitted period. If your circumstances change or you cannot return as planned, seek advice promptly rather than assuming the period will be extended automatically.

Keep the application managed while overseas

Arrange secure access to messages and keep contact details current. Tell your adviser about travel plans so that any location-related grant requirements and outstanding requests can be considered. Family members may have different visa arrangements and need separate checks.

For illustration, an applicant whose substantive visa expires during a planned holiday should not rely on a BVA shown in an old email as proof of return rights. Emigrate Lawyers can assess the current grants, proposed dates and pending application together before travel commitments are made.

Common questions

Is a BVB application itself permission to travel?

No. Check the granted visa and its travel period before leaving.

Can every bridging visa holder get a BVB?
